At the beginning of 2003, Shen Xiaoping, a returnee scholar from the United States, came to Shanghai Sipo Polytechnic (SSP) which was under construction to establish the School of Health Science and Nursing (SHSN), and put forward the four-word motto of "DILIGENCE, INTEGRITY, BENEVOLENCE and DEDICATION". With the approval of the Shanghai Municipal Government and the record of the Ministry of Education, all majors have been incorporated into the National College Entrance Examination (NCEE) enrollment plan since 2004, and SSP is qualified for issuing a state-recognized college diploma.
The school has also established cooperative teaching and practice relationships with all 35 3-A hospitals (the top level of hospital ranking in China) and more than 30 secondary hospitals in Shanghai.
The teaching team is led by Professor Shen Xiaoping, a returnee from the United States and an expert in science, education, culture and health of the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs. The team has 55 full-time teachers, among whom there are 6 with senior professional titles,17 with intermediate professional titles, 1 Chinese American expert, 1 French Chinese expert and 1 Filipino expert. Among them, dual-qualified teachers account for 63.6% and those with a Master’s or Doctor’s degree 45.4%. Besides, there are more than 50 part-time faculty, including teachers of general foundation requisites, and the total number is in accord with the teacher-student ratio of 1:18. The school has been conferred on 1 first prize and 1 second prize for its teaching achievement, 2 Teaching Teams, 3 Excellent Courses, 1 Overseas Renowned Teacher in Shanghai, 1 Renowned Teacher, all by Shanghai Municipal People’s Government or its Administrative Department.
Nursing Informatics and Multiculturalism and Nursing, the first innovative courses of its kind in China, were published by People's Medical Publishing House in 2007 and March 2012 respectively. In terms of the compilation and thesis, we have participated in the compilation and publication of more than 40 school-enterprise cooperative textbooks. They have irregularly been published by People's Medical Publishing House, Higher Education Press, Fudan University Press, Dalian University of Technology Press, Second Military Medical University Press, Huazhong University of Science and Technology Press, Jiangsu Science and Technology Press etc..
From 2012 to 2019, the school has won more than 40 national, provincial and municipal honors. Outstanding student representatives have won 20 awards in the competitions of provincial and municipal level and above. Young core teachers have published 22 papers officially recognized as excellence in such journals as Journal of Medical Informatics and Shanghai Nursing Journal, and applied for a total of 17 projects of national, Shanghai Municipal and college level.
In August 2016, the nursing major in the SHSN of SSP became one of the first National Demonstration Specialties of Health Service in Vocational Colleges issued by the Ministry of Education and the National Health and Family Planning Commission. In 2020, the project on the nursing was approved because it won the title of the first-class professional of Shanghai Double-High Plan. The project led by Ye Meng, executive vice president and secretary of the General Party Branch, won the second prize of Excellent Achievements in Party Construction of National Private Colleges by the Department of Ideology and Politics of the Ministry of Education. Apart from it, the General Party Branch was also awarded Shanghai Advanced Grass-roots Party Organization for Excellence by the Shanghai Municipal Committee of Education and Health.
After 18 years of development, nursing major has formed a training mode of nursing talents in higher vocational colleges, which concentrates on not only cultivating students' core competence in specialties, information acquisition and humanistic quality, but also integrating vocational qualification examination and the explorations of the path to international education in nursing. More than 50% of the nearly 10,000 graduates with excellent double quality have been employed by 3- A hospitals for 14 consecutive years, most of them in hospitals at all levels in Shanghai, and some from outside Shanghai in medical institutions all over the country. The average employment rate is 99%, and the ratio of utilization of graduate's specialty is above 98%. The high employment rate and high employment quality are welcomed and praised by hospitals, pension institutions at all levels, the news media as well as all walks of life. According to the third-party assessment of such data companies as MyCOS and Newjincin, the main indexes of employment quality of graduates who majored in nursing in the SHSN of SSP: correlation of employment quality with major (95.6%), dismission rate (9.76%), and satisfaction with Alma mater (92.38%) were far higher than those of any other vocational college in China from 2013 to 2017.
Since its establishment in 2003, the SHSN of SSP has taken the lead among schools of its kind in Shanghai in terms of such connotational development as scale, quality, management, efficiency, scientific research, combination of industry and education, and personnel training, playing a leading and exemplary role in the reform and development of nursing education of Private Colleges in Shanghai and even the whole country. The school established the Eight-School Alliance of Shanghai Private Colleges, prompted its members to cooperate and communicate, undertook the Strong Teacher Project of Shanghai Private Colleges for the first time, and actively connected with domestic nursing schools at all levels for visits for communication, learning, training and observation.
In 2016, it officially became the chief expert and group leader of the second Joint Research Project of Nursing Specialty, completed the sub-project of the Ministry of Education Research on Quality Standards and Credit Exchange of Nursing Specialty, and participated in the discussion about and formulation of the Guidance Program for Mutual Recognition and Transfer of Credits in Sino-European Higher Education. It also presided over the project of Decision-making Consulting Service Platform Construction of Improvement in the Shanghai Higher Vocational Education Quality, and the project of the Experiment on Exploration of New Mechanism of Regional Education Cooperation (Yangtze River Delta Education Cooperation Development) in the 2016, 2017 and 2018.
In the era of education informatization and Internet +, the United Teaching Information Company has convened more than 20 nursing schools from 10 provinces to establish the first Nursing Curriculum Alliance in Higher Vocational Education in China, to strengthen the sharing of quality education resources and teachers, and further improve the quality of personnel training. It has a wide range of influence and full of praise in the vocational colleges of its kind in Shanghai and even the whole country, completely playing an exemplary and leading part.
